Maine people comprise the best work force on the planet and will jump
back from the base closure "better than ever."

That's the response of Jack Cashman, director of the state's Department
of Economic and Business Development, to the news late Wednesday morning
that Brunswick Naval Air Station would close.

Cashman, reached shortly after the Base Realignment and Closure
commission voted 7-2 to put the base on the closure list, said the bad
news was the base closure decision. The good news, he added, was that
the process won't start until 2009.

"We have time," Cashman said. "The governor has given high priority to
helping the affected area. The Legislature will be receiving an economic
package. State resources will be made available. The process of actually
closing down won't begin until 2009 and we'll have three years after
that."

Within hours of the closure announcement, Gov. John Baldacci had signed
an agreement between Brunswick, Topsham and the state to form an Office
of Redevelopment and Re-employment.
