State, region plan quick response to planned closure of Navy base Bob Kalish Brunswick Times-Record (ME) August 25, 2005 Maine people comprise the best work force on the planet and will jump back from the base closure "better than ever." That's the response of Jack Cashman, director of the state's Department of Economic and Business Development, to the news late Wednesday morning that Brunswick Naval Air Station would close. Cashman, reached shortly after the Base Realignment and Closure commission voted 7-2 to put the base on the closure list, said the bad news was the base closure decision. The good news, he added, was that the process won't start until 2009. "We have time," Cashman said. "The governor has given high priority to helping the affected area. The Legislature will be receiving an economic package. State resources will be made available. The process of actually closing down won't begin until 2009 and we'll have three years after that." Within hours of the closure announcement, Gov.
