Subject: | [CPEO-IRF] Air Guard decisions thus far |
Even as a federal court threw at least a temporary wrench in Air Force plans to closure a number of Air National Guard installations without support of the host governor, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission approved major Air Guard closures on Cape Cod, Massachusetts (Otis ANG Base), Bradley Field (Hartford, CT), and Lambert Field (St. Louis, MO). However, the Commission voted to keep the Yeager Field (Charleston, WV) unit intact. I don't have a complete list of Air Guard decisions, but the Commission is working well into the night. In some cases, the Commission changed the destination of closing units, moving, for example, planes from Otis to within the state to Westfield. Though Otis is the BRAC 2005 base with the largest toxic cleanup program, it's not clear what the closure decision means for remediation there. Otis cleanup goals are driven by groundwater issues that are largely unrelated to the property's use, and it's unclear whether the Coast Guard will take over the operation of the airfield there. It's currently a major user of the Otis runways.
