Naval Station's closure no surprise to economic development leaders By MARGARET BAKER Biloxi Sun-Herald (MS) August 27, 2005 PASCAGOULA - Jackson County Economic Development Foundation officials outlined their success stories over the last three years Friday, and told city leaders they're already working to bring new business to the area following Naval Station Pascagoula's closure. Jerry St. Pé, the foundation's chairman, said this week's decision to close the base on Singing River Island came as no surprise and officials are already working to recover from the economic effects. "The greatest surprise would've been if Naval Station Pascagoula had not been designated for closure," St. Pé said, adding Navy officials first started talking about downsizing its fleet several years ago. ...
