Jacksonville residents oppose reopening Cecil Field The Associated Press Tuscaloosa News September 1, 2005 Some residents are opposed to reopening Cecil Field, a naval air station that closed in 1999, and are angry they were not asked before state and city officials lobbied for its return. Almost 500 residents attended a meeting at an equestrian center on Cecil Field that included an appearance by Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, The Florida Times-Union reported in Friday's editions. Peyton and Gov. Jeb Bush have spoken with lawmakers about the possibility of reopening the base and offered $200 million to relocate businesses at Cecil, plus another $100 million for housing. ...
