New deal: Otis stays

Cape Cod Times (MA)
September 13, 2005

Otis Air National Guard Base, placed on the Pentagon's chopping block
earlier this year, has received a last-minute reprieve from an
independent federal commission.

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission, in a report sent to
President Bush Friday, recommends that Otis instead be "realigned,"
although the base's F-15 fighter jets will still be moved to Western Massachusetts.

The report also affirms that the state National Guard would not lose any
jobs as part of the base reshuffle.

The challenge for Otis supporters now becomes finding a new military
mission for the Upper Cape air base, home to the first pilots to respond
on Sept. 11, 2001.
