[Now that Massachusetts leaders realize that the Air Force will be moving the jets from Otis Air National Guard Base, they are looking for replacement activity. They seem stuck, however, on federal and state uses, when experience from other bases, already closed, suggests that private development is more likely to generate jobs and economic activity, particularly in a location such as Cape Cod. - LS] Next: Find a use for Otis By KEVIN DENNEHY Cape Cod Times (MA) September 14, 2005 A day after state officials celebrated the survival of Otis Air National Guard Base, supporters recognized yesterday it's too soon to call this a total victory. State leaders quickly turned the fight toward preserving the base's F-15 fighter jets, which an independent federal commission recommended be moved to Western Massachusetts. Some asked: Why move the jets across the state if the airfield is staying open? Short of keeping the jets here, state National Guard leaders have begun the work of finding other missions to keep the Upper Cape base relevant, and replace jobs that would follow the jets. ...
