|Subject:||[CPEO-IRF] The price of Ingleside Naval Station (TX)|
[Predictably, local officials in Corpus Christi are asking their
Congressional delegation for help obtaining the Ingleside Naval Station
property below market cost. I expect them to be somewhat successful.
Since this is one of the few major Navy closures left on the BRAC 2005
list, this would put a large dent in the Navy's market-based disposal
strategy. – LS]|
Port begins effort to regain NS Ingleside
Officials hope area can acquire land at no cost
By Fanny S. Chirinos Corpus Christi Caller-Times (TX) September 14, 2005
Port of Corpus Christi commissioners decided Tuesday to begin discussions on acquiring Naval Station Ingleside. This is the first action the commission had taken regarding the 984 acres since the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round began earlier this year.
The port has reversionary rights to the land because it deeded the property to the Navy to build Naval Station Ingleside. The deed also stipulates the Department of Defense, which owns the property, has the option of selling it back to the port at fair market value.
The BRAC commission recommended closing the base in the list submitted to the president earlier this month. The president has until Nov. 7 to approve or disapprove the list in its entirety. If he disapproves, or Congress enacts a joint resolution of disapproval, the commissioners must revise their recommendations.
If the recommendation to close Naval Station Ingleside remains, the department could decide to hand over the property at no cost or sell the land the port.
