Officials figure out how to accommodate Fort Lee's growthSusan Robertson Petersburg Progress-Index (VA) September 14, 2005 PRINCE GEORGE - Rep. J. Randy Forbes, R-4th, hosted a luncheon yesterday at the Comfort Inn on Oaklawn Boulevard to brief local leaders from the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties on how Base Realignment and Closure Commission's decision to bring nearly 12,000 jobs to the area will affect their communities. "It is a great day for all of us," said Forbes. "I don't know of any other region that did a better job of coming together." On Aug. 24, the BRAC Commission upheld Department of Defense recommendations with regards to Fort Lee. If the president approves the BRAC recommendations on Nov. 7, Fort Lee will gain 6,531 employees, 1,151 civilians and 56 contractors for a total of 7,344 addition post personnel. State and local officials banded together and created a Regional BRAC Committee in an effort, not only to preserve Fort Lee, but to expand it. Over a period of three years, more than $100 million was put into renovating the housing at Fort Lee to make it top notch. Local and post officials worked to promote Fort Lee as a joint training center for all branches of the military. Officials also worked to acquire land near post that had previously been conveyed to the state and the federal Bureau of Prisons so that Fort Lee would have sufficient space to conduct their weapons training exercises. ...
