Redevelopment leases radiation-contaminated buildings to Shipyard artists' colony by Ahimsa Porter Sumchai, M.D. San Francisco Bay View September 21, 2005 It speaks to the desperation of the artists' colony at the Hunters Point Shipyard that, in the face of displacement, they are willing to occupy studios leased by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency to them in radiation contaminated regions on the former naval base. I am specifically concerned about the colony of artists occupying Building 366 on Parcel D of the shipyard. This region is the site of radiation-contaminated soils and a series of buildings ? the 300 series ? that are undergoing remediation for radiation-contaminated vents, drains and surfaces. Two years ago the artists were asked to vacate but were offered no safe, affordable relocation sites on or adjacent to the base. ...
