Mare Island's dredge ponds might reopen Some homeowners not happy with idea By CHRIS G. DENINA, Vallejo Times Herald (CA) September 22, 2005 As early as next summer, Mare Island's seven unused dredge ponds may once again take in spoils from local waterways. That has some homeowners concerned, despite assurances from the project developer. The residents aren't keen on the idea of sharing Vallejo's former military base with levees filled with sludge scooped from the bottom of the San Francisco Bay. Vallejo officials long have aimed to reopen the dredge ponds under the city's reuse plans for the old base. But since people began moving in this summer into the first new houses built in decades, folks are starting to notice. ...
