areas which usually do not need or want civilian airports. - LS] Warminster past may shed light on Horsham's future By: JACOB FENTON Lansdale Reporter (PA) October 9, 2005 WARMINSTER - Weeds are growing between cracks in a runway that was once a part of the Naval Air Warfare Center at Warminster. Roughly a decade ago, Warminster was up to its teeth in a losing fight to save the base, a situation similar to the one that Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base backers face now. In August, the BRAC Commission unanimously voted to close the Willow Grove base in Horsham. And like Horsham, Warminster and adjacent municipalities had no desire to see the military runway turned into a civilian airport. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, which contracts with the Federal Aviation Administration to provide airport planning for the region, has proposed using Willow Grove for corporate jets. Doing so, DVRPC officials have said, would help relieve pressure from Philadelphia International Airport, which is already one of the most congested in the country. But less than nine years after what the military terms its "operational closure," the runway and land surrounding it at Warminster has been converted into a massive park. ...
