Salton Sea shore developers must first pick through bomb test site Benjamin Spillman Palm Springs Desert Sun (CA) October 28, 2005 EL CENTRO - The people trying to sell an economic future on the desolate shores of the Salton Sea will first have to confront the troubled lake's Cold War past. Backers of a plan to use development revenue to fund a revival at the sea bet they can build thousands of homes on a defunct testing site used by the group that developed the atomic bomb. They're also considering relocating some of a wildlife refuge that hosts millions of migrating birds and converting thousands of acres of farmland to seaside homes and businesses. Those are just some of the obstacles to converting California's largest - and possibly most maligned - lake from a Golden State punch line to the economic centerpiece for a burgeoning region of more than half a million people. On Thursday, board members of the La Quinta-based Salton Sea Authority arguably took a small step toward that goal when they voted to keep talking with a group of bankers and real estate developers poised to invest $2 million in the billion-dollar effort. ...
