Virginia Beach City Council won't support taking Oceana homesBy MARISA TAYLOR AND JON W. GLASS The Virginian-Pilot October 29, 2005 VIRGINIA BEACH - After hedging for weeks, a majority of City Council members said Friday they are not willing to condemn homes to keep fighter jets at Oceana Naval Air Station. Under intense public pressure, council members have been struggling with how to comply with a federal base-closing commission’s ultimatum that requires them to condemn and buy homes and businesses in high-risk accident-potential zones around Oceana. Now, eight council members say they will not support condemning homes. Some made that commitment at a public meeting Tuesday. Others did so in interviews Friday. The comments come one week after the mayor of Jacksonville, Fla., announced that he will stop trying to lure Oceana’s jets to his city. ...
