Dioxin fears prompt moves regarding plant By LESLIE ALBRECHT MERCED SUN-STAR (CA) October 29, 2005 MERCED - Merced County has closed off one water line and disabled a pumping system at Atwater's wastewater treatment plant, where small amounts of the toxic chemical compounds known as dioxins were discovered late last year. The move comes more than a month after the city threatened to stop Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center's use of its wastewater treatment plant if the county did not take steps to find the source of the contamination and clean it up. "The board has been extraordinarily proactive in dealing with this," said County Executive Officer Dee Tatum. "The idea is to make sure the problem is dealt with as quickly and comprehensively as possible. That's why we're doing two rounds of testing." ...
