Subject: | [CPEO-IRF] CRS Report on base closure cleanup |
The Congressional Research Service has compiled a new (November 15, 2005) report on the "Role and Costs of Environmental Cleanup" (attached) at 2005-round base closures. The table on the last page includes the projected cleanup costs for 22 bases listed for closure, though the Cannon Air Force Base closure seems to be up in the air. It is my understanding that the estimates for the three Chemical Depots on the list: Newport, Umatilla, and Deseret (formerly Toole South) may significantly understate the environmental cleanup costs at those sites. Particularly at Deseret, there are large quantities of buried chemical munitions. Since no decision has been made to retrieve and dispose those items, that activity is not included in environmental cost estimates.
