Could its success happen here?
Center could be a boon for the Mohawk Valley economy

WHITESTOWN - Rocked by a military base closure in the 1990s, Anniston,
Ala., has seen an economic resurgence due in part to the location of a
homeland security training facility.

Now, 1,000 miles away, officials in Whitestown are hoping that the
Southern city's success could be replicated in an area that has seen its
own base closure and business struggles.

The New York State Preparedness Training Center that will open mid-2006
at the Oneida County Airport could spur similar economic development,
state officials said. The facility will train as many as 600 people a
week and create about 36 jobs, a number expected to grow.

State officials said the center will be one of only a few of its kind,
and pointed to the Alabama facility as an example of what can happen
when one is located in a community. For Anniston Mayor Chip Howell, the
impact of the New York center will be clear.
