Senate agrees to land return Port likely will get 922 acres for free from NS Ingleside By Fanny S. Chirinos Corpus Christi Caller-Times (TX) December 23, 2005 Like the U.S. House earlier this week, the Senate has agreed to allow the Coastal Bend to reclaim Naval Station Ingleside at no cost. The president's signature would be the final step to ensure approval. The transfer of base ownership is tucked inside next year's defense appropriations bill, approved by the Senate late Wednesday. The House approved the bill Monday. Chris Paulitz, spokesman for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said he expects the bill to arrive on the president's desk and be signed no later than today. The provision forces the Navy to return 922 of more than 1,000 acres of the Ingleside base to the Port of Corpus Christi. The port originally deeded the acreage to the Navy on the condition that ownership would return to the port if the Navy moved out. The Navy bought the remaining 155 acres after the base opened. Port officials have said they are interested in those acres. ... for the entire article, see http://www.caller.com/ccct/local_news/article/0,1641,CCCT_811_4337577,00.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Installation_Reuse_Forum mailing list Installation_Reuse_Forum@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/installation_reuse_forum | |
