Officials take role in cleanup at Army site Camp Bonneville - Clark County rejects pressure to leave the military to take care of ordnance and waste ALLAN BRETTMAN The Oregonian July 26, 2006 VANCOUVER -- Camp Bonneville, a 3,800-acre site contaminated with ordnance from years of Army training use, is a hazard to Clark County, but the county is better off forging ahead with a cleanup plan, the board of commissioners decided Tuesday. Five speakers urged the commissioners at their weekly meeting to reject entering into a cleanup agreement with the Army. They argued that the property is unsafe, the Army made it that way, and the Army alone should be responsible for cleaning it up. Some of the critics also said the proposed use of the property -- turning several acres into a public park -- was inappropriate. And two veterans urged the commissioners to consider allowing a military cemetery to be established on the property. ...
