Tempers fly during air base hearingBy Ed Baker Rockland Mariner (MA) August 11, 2006 A public hearing to review how the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station will be redeveloped and designed under a series of proposed regulations turned into a spirited discussion about contaminants and water usage. Weymouth resident Peter Scannell said South Shore Tri-Town Development Corporation needs to detail plans to protect families against contaminants left in the site’s soil by the Navy in its proposed regulatory frameworks. "We have not heard a single word that will protect families coming to the site," Scannell said during the Tuesday night hearing. "That site has four deadly toxins known to man. That should be included in the regulatory frameworks." The contaminants on the base consist largely of lead, aluminum, copper, nickel, zinc, PCB’s dioxins, pesticides and cleaning solvents.
