Officials look beyond Navy exit

Leaders listen to views about what to do with Naval Station Ingleside

Members of the Texas Senate subcommittee on Base Realignment and Closure
heard pleas for funding rail facilities, roads and other improvements to
help redevelop Naval Station Ingleside after the Navy moves out.

They may respond with legislation to fill that wish list, but they'll have
to hear it from the home crowd twice, said Sen. Jesus "Chuy" Hinojosa,
D-McAllen, who conducted the hearing Thursday at Corpus Christi City Hall
along with subcommittee chair Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D-El Paso. A second
hearing in Corpus Christi is tentatively scheduled for late September or
early October, Hinojosa said.

"Whatever the plan will be," Shapleigh said, "let's find the best use for
that land and turn in a bill to get it going."
