Clark seeks OK for camp cleanup Army land - The county must get the governor's approval for transfer before ordnance is removed HOLLEY GILBERT The Oregonian August 23, 2006 VANCOUVER -- The Clark County Board of Commissioners is seeking gubernatorial approval of a cleanup plan for Camp Bonneville before the county takes possession of the contaminated 3,840-acre tract. The board unanimously agreed Tuesday to send Gov. Chris Gregoire a letter asking her to determine if the plan, devised by the state Department of Ecology and Clark County, would adequately protect residents before, during and after the five-year cleanup process. Federal law requires the commissioners to get the governor's approval if the surplus U.S. Army land is to be transferred to the county before it is cleared of unexploded ordnance and other hazards. The area, about five miles east of Vancouver, was used for military training from 1909 through its closure in 1995. ...
