Devens moves to become state's first new town in decades
DEVENS, Mass. - The roads around Devens are lined by freshly planted trees, many with roots still bagged. A new hotel borders the town common, which is just two years old. The post office zip code wasn't even around during the last Census. There's a new look on seven square miles that was once part the Fort Devens military base, before it was shut down in 1996. Now the emerging community wants a new title: the first town incorporated in Massachusetts since 1920. Next month, residents in the three towns Fort Devens was created from - Ayer, Shirley and Harvard - will vote on a provocative proposal to incorporate Devens as the state's 352nd municipality, the first since East Brookfield was founded. ...
