Beach effort to keep Oceana encourages Navy’s leaderBy DALE EISMAN The Virginian-Pilot January 11, 2006 WASHINGTON — The Navy's top admiral said Tuesday that he's pleased with Virginia Beach’s beefed-up effort to control development around Oceana Naval Air Station and is sticking with a recommendation that Oceana remain the service’s East Coast master jet base. But Adm. Mike Mullen, the chief of naval operations, cautioned that it's not up to him to determine if the city and state have met conditions for Oceana’s long-term survival laid down last summer by a federal base-closing commission. "I'm encouraged about what I see and hear and read about what Virginia Beach is doing," Mullen told reporters. But the Pentagon's inspector general - not him - must decide whether the local effort meets requirements set by the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission, Mullen added. ...
