Island returns to state Singing River facility closed by BRAC ruling By MICHAEL NEWSOM Biloxi Sun Herald (MS) January 14, 2006 PASCAGOULA - The Singing River Island will revert back to the state at no cost when the Navy leaves, Gov. Haley Barbour's office announced Friday. The 437-acre island is home to Naval Station Pascagoula, which was effectively closed in August by the Department of Defense's Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC). Members of the Governor's Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal had asked that the Navy return the island to the state. Members of Mississippi and Texas' congressional delegations had been working on the bill since the days following the BRAC ruling. The bill also provides for the return of Naval Station Ingelside, which was also closed by BRAC, to the City of Corpus Christi, Texas. The state will not be responsible to reimburse the Navy for any improvements it made to the island since the state donated it. ...
