Galena seeks ways to offset looming base closure ECONOMIC IMPACT: Town hopes to expand boarding school, develop businesses. By STEFAN MILKOWSKI, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Anchorage Daily News (AK) January 15, 2006 FAIRBANKS -- With hopes pinned on expanding its boarding school and moving other service centers, the city of Galena is looking for engineering help in its first steps toward economic stability without its Air Force base. The Galena Air Force station was one of a number of bases slated for closure when Congress approved the recommendations of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission in November. Dozens of residents in the town of 700, located on the Yukon River 200 air miles west of Fairbanks, are dependent on the station for jobs. Galena's goal is to fill the gap left by the Air Force withdrawal by expanding the town's public boarding school and by encouraging business development. ...
