Life-sciences center may take site of Navy schoolBy Walter C. Jones, Morris News Service Augusta Chronicle (GA) February 1, 2006 ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue pictures a comprehensive, life-sciences research center on property soon to be abandoned in Athens with the closing of the Navy Supply Corps School, but he said it would be too early to talk about putting a second public medical school there. Other proposals for commercial applications there continue to circulate as the state formulates a plan to present to the U.S. Department of Defense for land that the military will abandon in the coming years. After the Base Closure and Realignment Commission announced in May that it was recommending the shuttering of the Navy school, Mr. Perdue said he was part of discussions with the University System of Georgia on plans for the property just a few miles from the main campus of the University of Georgia. He said Monday in an interview with Morris News Service that he favors keeping the property as a site for an educational endeavor. His mother had attended college at the same site when it was home to the state's "normal school" or teacher's college. ...
