Los Angeles Air Force Base's new home is almost complete Workers will be moving into quarters that resulted from an effort to keep the base from being closed. By Andrea Sudano Daily Breeze (Torrance, CA) February 7, 2006 Less than a year after dodging the base closure bullet, supporters of Los Angeles Air Force Base have another reason to cheer. Aside from a few odds and ends, construction on a good chunk of a $115 million overhaul is complete, allowing base personnel to work in modern facilities for the first time since the 1950s. ... In the deal hatched in 2002, Hawthorne annexed the 42 acres of El Segundo land occupied by the base -- known as Area A.
