PARTIAL DEP OK So far, so good on MOT cleanup
The state Department of Environmental Protection has given a partial sign-off on the cleanup of the former Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne. On Jan. 31, the DEP sent a letter telling the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority that "no further action" is required for soil remediation at the MOT, now known as the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor. Getting that approval is crucial for the city's plans to develop the 430-acre Peninsula as a mixed-use community, expected to generate millions in future tax revenue. But Ken Kloo, an administrator of DEP's Office of Brownfield Re-use, said yesterday that the BLRA still needs to do some investigative work and come up with a remediation strategy for ground water contamination at the former Army base, which juts out from the east side of Route 440 at 32nd Street. ...
