Miracle of Coyote Gulch Old dump in Presidio ravine now a haven for wildlife Jane Kay San Francisco Chronicle February 9, 2006 On the Presidio's western coastline, songbirds trilled and whistled in the scrubby brush on the dunes sloping down to the mouth of San Francisco Bay. With the early spring weather, courting was in full swing. Western meadowlarks and Bewick's wrens flitted in and out of the newly opened coastal ravine with its own freshwater creek, a rich habitat that until last year had been hidden under tons of fill for nearly a century. A new push for restoration at the Presidio is turning toxic-waste dumps into wildlife habitat. The National Park Service, using $99 million from the former owner, the U.S. Army, is fixing up the 1,480-acre Presidio an acre at a time. ...
