Lewis: Rezone fort land for what’s there now Council prez: Zoning would help control future development BY SUE MORGAN Long Branch Atlanticville (NJ) February 16, 2006 Before developers come knocking at Eatontown’s doors with building plans for what is now Fort Monmouth, a borough official wants to lay down some ground rules. Although the local U.S. Army base is not scheduled to be shut down by the federal government until September 2011, Borough Council President Theodore F. Lewis Jr. believes the municipal government should act now to safeguard Eatontown’s share of the base property to discourage builders who might one day seek to erect development unacceptable to the community as a whole. Presently, Fort Monmouth is zoned as public land, which means that it is owned by a government entity, or in this case the federal government, according to Peggy Ciok of the borough’s Planning and Zoning Office. ...
