Arsenic levels may limit housing at Concord baseby Mavis Scanlon East Bay Business Times (CA) April 7, 2006 Plans for homes, parks, schools and offices on the closed portion of the Concord Naval Weapons Station may be limited by an old problem - the Navy's use of an arsenic-laced herbicide. The city of Concord has for years been pushing for the redevelopment of the 5,170 acre inland portion of the 12,800-acre station, a major ammunition transshipment port, which the Navy had used since 1942 to support its Pacific fleet. Last year, as part of its Base Realignment and Closure process, the Department of Defense recommended the site be closed, granting the city's wishes. About half of the inland area slated for development was unused by the Navy and remains uncontaminated. But the problem areas cover a larger swath than was initially estimated. Site 22, a 530-acre portion of the inland site known as the Main Magazine Area, is heavily contaminated with arsenic from an herbicide the Navy used to eliminate fire hazards. ...
