State to help fund Galena runway maintenanceBy R.A. DILLON Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (AK) April 12, 2006 JUNEAU--The Senate Finance Committee approved a state match to continue partial military involvement in maintaining the state-owned runway in Galena. The $95,000 in state general funds would replace federal money lost when the U.S. Air Force decided last year to pull out of the Yukon River community. The Air Force has had a presence in Galena for more than 50 years, but the Base Closure and Realignment Commission chose to stop using the community as a forward operating location last summer. The town, which has taken over part of the former military base for use as a boarding school, was shocked into action. City and tribal officials met with the state to discuss possible solutions for keeping the base open. ...
