Development gets green light Air Force ponied up to privatize mop-up of Lowry asbestos By Todd Hartman Rocky Mountain News (CO) April 21, 2006 A long-running dispute over potential asbestos hazards that delayed redevelopment on part of the former Lowry Air Force Base has been resolved, opening the door for cleanup and construction to begin. Workers last week began sampling soil on a 10-acre parcel at the former base to determine levels of asbestos contamination and whether any soil must be removed from a section of Lowry known as the Northwest Neighborhood. The action marks major progress for the site after a three-year standoff between state regulators and the Air Force over requirements that the military sample for and clean up any asbestos-contaminated soil. The Air Force long balked at the prospect, arguing the risk was too small to justify the costly work. ...
