Despite ruling, officials say Oceana to stayBy DALE EISMAN The Virginian-Pilot May 25, 2006 WASHINGTON — Despite a Pentagon ruling that they've failed to meet a federal demand for reducing development around Oceana Naval Air Station, state and Virginia Beach officials joined the area's congressional delegation Wednesday in saying the fight to save the base is far from over. Oceana "will be in operation in my judgment for another decade," said U.S. Sen. John Warner, R-Va . Locating and preparing an alternate site for the base's 200-plus fighter jets and the people who fly and maintain them will take at least that long, he said - if it can be done at all . There are signs that Warner's optimism is well-founded. In Florida, where the site of a former Navy base has been identified as an alternative location for Ocean's jets, Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton reiterated that his city does not want the Navy to return. ...
