Jacksonville sells base land to tire makerBy LOUIS HANSEN AND DALE EISMAN The Virginian-Pilot June 7, 2006 Cementing its intention to turn a former Navy base into an economic engine, the city of Jacksonville, Fla., has signed a deal to land a $44 million tire distribution center at the former Cecil Field. Jacksonville officials have announced the sale of a 63-acre parcel of Cecil Commerce Center to tire manufacturer Bridgestone Firestone and hinted that deals with two more major new tenants could be finalized within months. Meanwhile, Hampton Roads officials hope the growing commercial interest in Cecil Field will encourage Florida to formally drop its pursuit of fighter jet squadrons from Oceana Naval Air Station. ...
