BRAC study OK'd by committee House Appropriations Committee agrees to federal study on impact in Columbus, other areas affected BY HARRY FRANKLIN Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (GA) June 16, 2006 The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has a federal study on the impact of Base Realignment and Closure Commission decisions on schools in the Columbus area and other communities similarly affected, said U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Columbus, a committee member. Bishop has worked closely with the Muscogee County School District to help find a solution for the impact of the influx of students that will result from the expansion of Fort Benning. The Columbus area expects to receive as many as 9,000 new students after the completion of troop redeployment, between now and 2012, with the largest numbers expected in the later years. The appropriations bill, which passed the full committee Tuesday, includes language inserted by Bishop directing the Government Accountability Office to study the effects of rebasing and relocation of military personnel. It specifically instructs the agency to research "the projected number and percentage increase in student enrollment and the economic impact which may result from increased student enrollment." ...
