Military training ground gets new lease on life Property transfer - After an ordnance cleanup, Camp Bonneville could become a park and a veterans cemetery BILL STEWART and ALLAN BRETTMAN The Oregonian October 4, 2006 VANCOUVER -- Camp Bonneville could be ready for transformation into public use about a century after it began as a site for military maneuvers. With the blessing of Gov. Chris Gregoire, Clark County commissioners on Tuesday approved the early transfer of the former military training ground from the U.S. Army to a nonprofit corporation. Bonneville Conservation, Restoration and Renewal Team could begin work by the end of October to investigate and clean up unexploded ordnance on the camp's more than 3,000 acres. Tuesday's action was perhaps the most significant step toward a second life for the property. The first step took place in 1995, when the military placed it on its Base Realignment and Closure list as surplus property. The transfer is "early" because similar transfers typically occur after cleanup. ...
