In the politics of post-Army Fort Monroe, an inevitable crisis has finally surfaced. It shows why journalists and broadcasters should press political candidates for answers about Fort Monroe.

The crisis pits a handful of powerful Hampton people against a growing group - pretty much everybody else who's paying attention.

The powerful handful want Fort Monroe merely as Hampton's economic plum. Pretty much everybody else wants some higher level of stewardship.

The powerful handful want the heart of the post's green space for upscale housing. Pretty much everybody else wants that green space for everybody.
