Depot land transfer in questionBy JIM HOOK Chambersburg Public Opinion (PA) December 1, 2006 The Army is asking for no strings attached to the land it wants to hold onto at Letterkenny Army Depot. Letterkenny Army Depot commander Col. Robert Swenson has proposed that the installation keep 225 acres that is scheduled to transfer to the Letterkenny Industrial Development Authority, but the Army cannot guarantee that the land would be conveyed to LIDA should the 2015 base closure commission mothball Letterkenny. Swenson is expected to present his proposal to the LIDA board on Monday. LIDA approved the deal last month - provided LIDA could negotiate "favorable terms" with the Army for allowing the land to stay in Army hands. One of the favorable terms was the no-cost conveyance back to LIDA in the event of Letterkenny's closing. LIDA is creating the Cumberland Valley Business Park on about 1,350 acres that was cut from the Army depot as a result of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
