Touro, city to discuss M.I. village

As early as next month, Vallejo officials could give Touro University a 
shot at building a university "village" at Mare Island's north end, 
ending confusion over who would assume responsibility for cleaning up 
the contaminated land and revamping the 191 acres.

City staff plan to update the City Council on Tuesday about the proposal 
to enter talks with Touro over the project. The deal could signal the 
end of master developer Lennar Mare Island LLC's lead role in taking 
early transfer of the remaining Navy-owned land on the old ship-building 
base.

Touro proposes a university village with classrooms, student housing and 
businesses like bookstores and coffee shops. Plans also include a 
re-search center for such companies as biotech firms, and a community 
and cultural center showcasing Vallejo's diverse population.
