Shipyard could be cleaned by 2012, Navy says But spokesman says meeting 49ers' goal for new park would be hard Robert Selna, Cecilia M. Vega San Francisco Chronicle (CA) January 4, 2007San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's promise that toxic contamination at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard can be cleaned up in time for the 49ers to start play in a stadium there by the team's 2012 deadline would be difficult but not impossible to keep, Navy officials said Wednesday. The Navy is in charge of decontaminating the former shipyard, which Newsom offered to the 49ers last week as a possible stadium site in hopes of persuading the team not to move to Santa Clara. The Navy built and repaired ships and conducted radiological experiments at the 500-acre shipyard before closing it in 1974. Team co-owner John York reacted skeptically to the mayor's idea, noting in a letter to Newsom that among other problems with the site, the cleanup has been fought over and delayed for years. York has said he wants his team out of Monster Park by 2012. "I think the 2012 timetable is difficult, but I think that it can be done," Doug Gilkey, the Navy's shipyard base closure manager, said Wednesday. "Lots of details need to be worked out, but we're on the same page with the city that it's a distinct possibility." ...
