Cleanup costs a big hurdle By Mary Feldhusen Escanaba Daily Press (MI) January 8, 2007WELLS TOWNSHIP - The Hannahville Indian Community unveiled plans in August 2005 for commercial development in Wells Township. Approximately 37 acres of land earmarked for the housing and recreational project is property owned by the Air Force. The land was used by the Air Force as a former Defense Fuel Supply Point. Huge tanks located there were used for storage of jet fuel that was pumped to K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in the Gwinn area. When the base closed in 1995, the Air Force was charged with liquidating all related land and holdings, said Ann Jousma-Miller, Delta County’s Economic Development Alliance (DCEDA) director. At one time, the Air Force was planning to transfer the "tank farm" to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), and ultimately the Hannahville Indian Community, Dave Anthony, Hannahville’s director of community development and government affairs said. Reservation property is held in trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the DOI. ...
