Mark Hanson curates the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, which draws 16,000
to 17,000 visitors a year.

Jerry Zachary remembers being in awe of the huge crowds that filled the
Rantoul Township High School gym when he played for the Eagles in the 1950s.

"We packed the gym for every game," remembers Zachary, who's now
superintendent of Ludlow grade school. "It was a great feeling playing
before 1,600 people.

"The most popular tickets were up in the balcony, and families bought the
same tickets year afer year. In those days, a relative had to die before
you could inherit a ticket."

Zachary served as superintendent at Rantoul High from 1994 to 2005. He saw
the attendance drop significantly after Chanute Air Force Base closed.
