Public helps arsenal cleanup By BILL RODGERS Warren Tribune Chronicle (OH) March 12, 2007RAVENNA — As excavators equipped with blast shields shred the remaining abandoned buildings at the historic Ravenna arsenal, the Army and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency are seeking public comment on plans to clean up some equally-historic piles of junk. The Army will host an open house and public information meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Newton Falls Community Center Auditorium, 52 E. Quarry St., to discuss possible cleanup plans for debris at the Erie Burning Grounds and Open Demolition Area No. 2 at the Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant. The public has until April 5 to comment on these plans and a proposal for cleaning debris at the Central Burn Pits, the OEPA reported. Irv Venger, facility manager at the arsenal, said that the Open Demolition Area was used to detonate old munitions, the Central Burn Pits were a dump for construction materials, while the Erie Burning Grounds was used by the arsenal to dispose of its waste bonfire-style. ...
