Developer fighting battles on 2 fronts RICHARD WEIZEL Connecticut Post April 8, 2007STRATFORD - U.S. Army officials, their patience exhausted after waiting 11 years for plans to advance, have made it clear: They do not want Team Stratford and its new management group, Monti-Posillico of New York, to redevelop the sprawling former Army Engine plant on Main Street. But Donald Monti, the management group's new leader, has more than one fight on his hands. In Glen Cove, N.Y., a small city of 26,000 on Long Island, residents and officials are sharply divided over plans for a major waterfront development project at a former military munitions site — a debate that is reminiscent of what's happening in Stratford. The Long Island project, however, has advanced further, with a signed contract between Monti-Posillico and the city and partial cleanup of the contaminated 50-acre site. Controversy on Long Island The Glen Isle project would be a multi-use development that includes more than 1,110 housing units. Opponents, however, contend the ever-changing plan, which originally proposed 590 housing units, will damage the environment, clog local roads and bring in too many new residents, placing a heavy burden on the school system, police and volunteer fire department. ...
