Galena working toward transition By Margaret Friedenauer Fairbanks Daily News-Miner April 9, 2007 It's a time of change and uncertainty for Galena.The town with about 650 residents that sits on the north bank of the Yukon River about 250 miles west of Fairbanks is preparing to lose a partnership with the U.S. Air Force it's known and relied on for nearly half a century. The federal government's 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decision will remove the Air Force from Galena by September 2008. Officials figure about 40 percent of the town's jobs depend on the Air Force. In preparing for that transition, town and tribal officials are looking to a variety of options, including the expansion of its boarding school, the possible arrival of a state-wide military youth academy program and even some private ventures that might be enough to keep the infrastructure standing and economy viable after the Air Force is gone.
