Air Force makes pitch for strip

It could be the break proponents of the airstrip at Willow Grove Naval 
Air Station were waiting for.

In a letter to Gov. Ed Rendell dated April 12, Secretary of the Air 
Force Michael Wynne stated the Air Force could support a plan to 
establish a joint interagency facility at the Horsham Township base.
"The Air Force is willing to continue to assist Pennsylvania with this 
vision consistent with our long-term roles and responsibilities," Wynne 
said.

But just what is an interagency facility?

In October, then-Sen. Rick Santorum spoke to more than 300 state 
federal, county and local officials, and said Willow Grove could be used 
as a staging area for relief efforts for responses to natural disasters 
or terror attacks.

He said the model of the Regional Joint Readiness Center based at the 
Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station could be applied to 
Willow Grove. Units stationed there provide homeland security and 
community-based medical support for the Department of Defense and the 
Department of Homeland Security.
