Stratford Army plant bids imminent RICHARD WEIZEL Connecticut Post Online April 27, 2007STRATFORD - After representatives of a global real estate firm toured the closed Army engine plant this week, plans are taking shape to seek bids on redeveloping the sprawling Main Street property in 60 days, Mayor James R. Miron said Friday. Representatives of Cushman and Wakefield, hired recently by the federal General Services Administration to conduct a fact-finding and market analysis, toured the 79-acre site Tuesday with more than 20 Army, federal, state and local officials. ...After touring the contaminated former plant on the banks of the Housatonic River, Cushman and Wakefield officials want everyone to "keep an open mind" about how to market the property, Miron and other town officials said. "They made it clear we need to keep an open mind about what should be developed there, but are also aware, because of the site's contamination, it doesn't bode well for a housing component," the mayor said. Miron explained the U.S. Army is obligated to clean up the site only to meet industrial standards, estimated to cost about $50 million. To clean the property to standards suitable for housing could cost as much as $150 million, officials said. ...
