Environmental issues key in Gillem redevelopment By Daniel Silliman Clayton News-Daily (GA) April 27, 2007Within the next month, the future of Fort Gillem will take one of three directions. Members of the Local Redevelopment Authority will determine if the 65-year-old, 1,500-acre Army installation will be dedicated to light Industrial development, mixed-use development built around a central circle of greenspace, or transformed into mostly retail outlets, with a secondary development of single- and multiple-family housing. But whatever is decided, the LRA must take in account an environmental history that is troublesome. The environmental issues with the fort�s redevelopment will likely continue to surface, though the basic facts are already available from the United States Army's report, said Dustin Heizer, who mapped the environmental concerns for the LRA. On the almost 1,200 acres the Army will be leaving behind in Forest Park, there are 26 buried tanks of petroleum products, seven of which have already needed some clean-up. ...
