Irvine OKs housing, retail project near SpectrumPlan will add 1,456 residential units on a parcel rezoned from industrial use. By SONYA SMITH THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER (CA) May 3, 2007IRVINE - The Planning Commission on Thursday approved for the Irvine Co. to build 1,456 studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom residences and 1,000 square feet of retail space near the Irvine Spectrum. The 28-acre parcel and surrounding planning areas were rezoned by the City Council last June to allow 7,600 dwellings. City staff said that the residential zoning replaces mostly research and industrial zoning. The change in zoning is expected to bring another $2.42 million in tax revenue to the city each year. The area was once under Federal Aviation Administration restrictions because of the presence of the El Toro air base. But, the air base's closure lifted those restrictions - allowing homes in the area. ...
